第15章

I saw the truth of that even more when thespotted cow had her first calf.

Our milk cows were all the old kind of longhorncattle and didn’t give a lot of milk. It was veryhard to find one that would give much more thanher calf needed. We would have to milk five or sixcows to get enough milk just for the family.

But we had one cow with bent horns which didgive a lot of milk. She was called Rose. She wasgetting old, though, and Mama kept hoping eachtime she had a calf that it would turn out to be asgood a milker as Rose. Two or three of Rose”scalves didn’t have specially much milk, and then

along came this spotted one that was big - bonedand ugly enough to make a good milk cow.

The only trouble was that this cow. Spot,as wecalled her,had been wild as a snake from the dayshe was born. When you tried to drive her with theother cattle she’d run off and hide,When you edgedher into a corner and tried to got your hands onher, she’d turn on you and start fighting. Mamahad been trying all along to get Spot gentle beforeshe had her first calf, but it was no use. Spot didn’

t want to be friends with anybody. We knew shewas going to give us a whole lot of trouble when westarted to milk her.

One evening I couldn’t find Spot with the restof our milk cows, and when I was driving them upnext day,she still wasn’t with them.

“It’s time for he r to ca lve ,”Mama said,“a nd Ife e l sure she”s got one .”

So next morning I went into the hills andlooked everywhere. At last I found her,by a littlespring in a thick wood of bushes. I got a quick lookat the wobbly, long - legged calf that was with herbefore Spot ran for me. She chased me right to thetop of the next high hill before she turned back.

I tried again. I got to the edge of the bushesand picked up some stones. I started throwing the

stones and yelling, trying to frighten her and thecalf out. I got her out,all right, but she wasn”tfrightened. She came straight for me,with her hornslow. I had to turn tail a second time, and again shechased me right to the top of the hill.

I tried it once more. Then I went back to thecabin and got Old Yeller. I didn’t know if he knewanything about driving cattle or not ,but I was surehe’d be able to stop her chasing me.

And he did. I went to the edge of the bushesand started shouting and throwing stones. Out camethe cow, angrier than ever it seemed. I yelled at OldYeller.“Ge t he r ,Ye lle r,”I shouted. And Yeller gother. He played a neat trick on that cow.

I didn’t see it the first time. I was getting awayfrom there too fast. I’d hit a stone and fallen to myknees when I turned to run from Spot, and she wastoo close behind for me to look back and see whatOld Yeller was doing.

I just heard her frightened bellow and thecrashing bushes as Old Yeller rolled her into them.

I ran a little more before I looked back. Thecow was getting to her feet in a cloud of dust andshe looked as if she didn”t know what had

happened any better than I did. Then she saw OldYeller. She stamped, stuck her tail in the air, andmade for him. Yeller might have been scared to bitsfrom the way he ran. Then, like a flash,he was racingback round the bushes. A second afterwards hewas coming in behind Spot.
