第83章 University of Geneva: This is for you

日内瓦大学:为你而存在

英文导读

The University of Geneva (French: Université de Genève) is a public research university located in Geneva, Switzerland. It was founded in 1559 by John Calvin, as a theological seminary and law school. It remained focused on theology until the 17th century, when it became a center for Enlightenment scholarship. The Academy was originally conceived as a theological and humanist seminary, the guardian of Reform doctrine. During the Enlightenment distinguished scholars found inspiration here and new disciplines were introduced such as physical and natural sciences, law and philosophy. The Academy shed its ecclesiastical vocation during the political and social upheavals of the 19th century. In 1873, it dropped its religious affiliations and became officially secular. Today, the university is the second-largest university in Switzerland. It has programs in various fields but is particularly acknowledged for its academic and research programs in international relations (with Geneva being hostess to a dense agglomeration of international organizations), law, astrophysics, astronomy and genetics (with a record of prominent contributions to the fields of planetary science, genetics, developmental psychology, neuroscience, and theology ). The university holds and actively pursues teaching, research, and community service as its primary objectives. The university offers more than 280 types of degrees and more than 250 Continuing Education programmes covering an extremely wide variety of fields: exact sciences, medicine and humanities. Its domains of excellence in research include life sciences (molecular biology and bio-informatics), physics of elementary particles, and astrophysics.

System: The university is composed of eight faculties: Faculty of Sciences, Faculty of Medicine; Faculty of Arts; Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences, including Business (HEC Geneva); Faculty of Law (Geneva Law School); Faculty of Protestant Theology; Faculty of Psychology and Education; School of Translation and Interpretation.

City show: Geneva is the second most populous city in Switzerland (after Zürich) and is the most populous city of Romandy, the French-speaking part of Switzerland. The city has been referred to as the world"s most compact metropolis and the “Peace Capital”. Geneva has historically been considered a Protestant city, and was known as the “Protestant Rome” due to it being the base of John Calvin, William Farel and other Reformers.
