University of Strasbourg

The University of Strasbourg in Strasbourg, Alsace, France, is the second largest university in France (after Aix-Marseille University). The university emerged from a Lutheran humanist German Gymnasium, founded in 1538 by Johannes Sturm in the Free Imperial City of Strasburg. As a strong intellectual center in Europe during the 17th century, the University then experienced three centuries of bicultural development being moved back and forth between France and Germany. It was transformed to a university(Universit.t Stra.bur) in 1621 and elevated to the ranks of a royal university in 1631. It was divided in the 1970s into three separate institutions: Louis Pasteur University, Marc Bloch University, and Robert Schuman University. On 1 January 2009, the fusion of these three universities recreated a united University of Strasbourg. The university campus covers a vast part near the center of the city. Modern architectural buildings include: Escarpe, the Doctoral College of Strasbourg, Atrium and others. European by nature and international by design, the University"s strengths and assets stem from its active involvement in virtually every discipline comprising the current body of knowledge. As a young university founded on an age-old tradition, it strives to attain cross-disciplinarity so that this mixing fosters new research opportunities and produces courses that meet society"s needs.

System: There are 38 faculties, schools and institutes at the University of Strasbourg that cover five areas of teaching, including Arts, Literature and Languages (Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Languages and Applied Human Sciences , Faculty of Modern Languages, Faculty of Literature, International Institute for French Studies ); Law, Economics, Management, Political and Social Sciences (Centre for International Intellectual Property Studies , University Centre for Journalism , EM Strasbourg Business School, Faculty of Law, Political Science and Management, Faculty of Economics and Management, Institute of Political Studies , General Administration Preparatory Institute , Institute of Higher European Studies , Labour Institute ); Social Sciences and Humanities(Faculty of Geography and Development, Faculty of Psychology, Faculty of Catholic Theology, Faculty of Protestant Theology, Faculty of Education Sciences, Faculty of Sport Sciences , University Institute for Teacher Training, Faculty of Philosophy, Linguistics and Education Sciences, Faculty of Historical Sciences, Department of Social Sciences, Social Practices and Development); Science and Technology (School and Observatory for Earth Sciences, European School of Chemistry, Polymers and Materials , National Superior School of Physics , Superior School of Biotechnology , Faculty of Chemistry , Faculty of Life Sciences , Haguenau University Institute of Technology , Louis Pasteur University Institute of Technology , Robert Schuman University Institute of Technology , Astronomical Observatory , Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science , Faculty of Physics and Engineering ); Health(Faculty of Dental Medecine , Faculty of Medicine , Faculty of Pharmacy ).

City show: Strasbourg is the capital and principal city of the Alsace region in eastern France and is the official seat of the European Parliament. Strasbourg is fused into the Franco-German culture and although violently disputed throughout history, has been a bridge of unity between France and Germany for centuries. The city is chiefly known for its sandstone Gothic Cathedral with its famous astronomical clock, and for its medieval cityscape of Rhineland black and white timber-framed buildings, particularly in the Petite-France district (tanners" district) alongside the Ill and in the streets and squares surrounding the cathedral, where the renowned Maison Kammerzell stands out.
