University of Paris VI (French： Université Pierre-et-Marie-Curie or UPMC， also known as "Paris VI")， is a university located on the Jussieu Campus in the Latin Quarter of the 5th arrondissement of Paris， France.It was established in 1971 following the division of the University of Paris， and is a principal heir to its Faculty of Sciences. This school， founded by Guillaume de Champeaux in 1109， played a major role in the intellectual effervescence of the Latin Quarter for several centuries. Grammar， rhetoric， dialectics， music， arithmetic， geometry， astronomy and even technology were all taught there. After the Revolution， the site was occupied by various warehouses before being reintegrated into the world of research as a part of the Faculty of Science of the University of Paris in 1959. UPMC is the largest scientific and medical complex in France， active in many fields of research with scope and achievements at the highest level， as demonstrated by the many awards regularly won by UPMC researchers， and the many international partnerships it maintains across all five continents. UPMC， which is the main heir of the Faculty of Sciences of the Sorbonne， possesses a university heritage which brings together historical sites， works of contemporary art and scientific collections， not to mention the intangible heritage constituted by research dissertations and scientific teaching.
System： UPMC is composed of seven departments and faculties： chemistry， engineering， mathematics， medicine， physics， life sciences， earth sciences， environment and biodiversity. Within the faculty of mathematics is ISUP， the premier school of statistics in France. With 120 research units on 33 sites， it has a 30，000-strong student body， including 3，500 doctoral students， which is served by around 3，250 academics. It has over 180 laboratories， most of them associated with the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS). UPMC also has branches in regions outside Paris： 3 ocean logical observatories， at Roscoff (Atlantic Ocean)， Banyuls and Villefranche-sur-Mer (Mediterranean Sea).
