The Polytechnic Institute of Milan (Milan： The Politecnico di Milano) is the largest technical university in Italy. Founded in 1863 by a group of scholars and entrepreneurs belonging to prominent Milanese families， it is the oldest university in Milan. It offers undergraduate， graduate and higher education courses in Engineering， Architecture and Design. Politecnico di Milano carries out strategic research in the fields of energy， transport， planning， management， design， mathematics， natural and applied sciences， ICT， built environment and cultural heritage. The University is distributed over 7 campuses： 2 main campuses in Milan and other 5 satellite campuses across Lombardy and Emilia Romagna. Milano Leonardo is the oldest among Politecnico campuses still in use. The Milano Bovisa campus is located in the Bovisa district in Milan and active since 1989. The University organizes many cultural activities， ranging from concerts to shows and plays， fine arts exhibitions， seminars， meetings， lectures by well known scientists， philosophers， writers etc.

该校学术风格扎实，擅长工商管理、工程学及建筑学等专业，尤其以工程学及建筑学闻名于世，是欧洲建筑及工程专业规模最大的综合类院校。学校十分注重对学生实际工作能力和应变能力的训练，使得该校毕业生在就业方面极具竞争力。米兰理工大学是研究型大学中的典型代表。
学校人才辈出，早在1963年居里奥·纳塔就获得了诺贝尔化学奖，此外著名的建筑师伦佐·皮亚诺和时装设计师弗朗哥·费雷均出自于该校。
