The University of Manchester is a public research university in Manchester, England.The University of Manchester can trace its roots to the formation of the Mechanics" Institute (later to become UMIST) in 1824.The University of Manchester has been a"Red Brick University" since 1880 when Victoria University gained its royal charter. The university was established and granted a Royal Charter in 1880 becoming England"s first civic university; it was renamed the Victoria University of Manchester in 1903 and absorbed Owens College the following year. It was formed in 2004 by the amalgamation of the Victoria University of Manchester and the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology. The University of Manchester has 25 Nobel Laureates among its past and present students and staff, the third-highest number of any single university in the United Kingdom after Cambridge and Oxford.

The John Rylands Library: The University of Manchester Library is the largest non-legal deposit library in the UK and the third-largest academic library after those of Oxford and Cambridge. It has the largest collection of electronic resources of any library in the UK. The John Rylands Library, founded in memory of John Rylands by his wife Enriqueta Augustina Rylands as an independent institution, is situated in a Victorian Gothic building on Deansgate, in the city centre. It houses an important collection of historic books and other printed materials, manuscripts, including archives and papyri.
