The University of Durham， commonly known as Durham University， is a public research university in Durham， England. It was founded by an Act of Parliament in 1832 and granted a Royal Charter in 1837. Durham is a collegiate university， and it has a similar organizational structure to Oxford and Cambridge and is made up of 17 self-governed colleges. The estate is divided across two separate locations： Durham City and Queen"s Campus， Stockton. Durham City is the main location of the university and contains 14 of the 16 colleges along with most of the academic departments. There are currently a limited number of subjects studied at Queen"s Campus. Current subjects are： Medicine， Biomedical Sciences， Accounting， Business and Finance， Applied Psychology， Primary Education and Human Sciences. The two locations are connected via a free bus service that runs frequently throughout the week.
System： Durham University has 17 colleges， of which University College is the oldest， founded in 1832. These colleges are： Collingwood College， St. Aidan"s College， St. Chad"s College， St. Cuthbert"s Society， College of St. Hild and St. Bede， St. John"s College， St. Mary"s College， Stephenson College， Trevelyan College， University College， Ustinov College， Van Mildert College， Grey College， Hatfield College， University College， John Snow College， Josephine Butler College. The teaching departments of the University are divided into three faculties： Science， Arts and Humanities， and Social Sciences and Health. Many courses of Durham University are among the best in the country with Education Studies， Engineering and History in particular being number 1 in the UK. There is no formal teaching at most Durham colleges. The colleges dominate the residential， social， sporting， and pastoral functions within the university， and there is heavy student involvement in their operation.
City show： Sitting on the River Wear， Durham is well known for its Norman cathedral and castle. The cathedral is generally regarded as one of the finest Romanesque cathedrals in Europe and the rib vaulting in the nave marks the beginning of Gothic ecclesiastical architecture and has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site along with nearby Durham Castle.The castle has been the home of Durham University since 1832.The castle was originally built in the eleventh century as a projection of the Norman power in the north of England.

杜伦大学的很多学科领域的实力都异常雄厚。理科方面它拥有全国一流的物理系和化学系，世界一流的实验室和高度专业化的设备。同样在文科方面，历史系、神学和宗教研究系及英语研究系的教学和科研也享誉国际。
