Queen"s University Belfast is a public research university in Belfast， Northern Ireland. The university"s official title， per its charter， is The Queen"s University of Belfast. It is often referred to simply as Queen"s， or by the abbreviation QUB. The university was chartered in 1845， and opened in 1849 as “Queen"s College， Belfast”， but has roots going back to 1810 and the Royal Belfast Academical Institution. Founded as Queen’s College in 1845， it became a university in its own right in 1908. Queen"s University is unique. Few other universities across the world combine international recognition for research and national recognition for innovation in the curriculum with the student-centred ethos and leadership role in the community which are the hallmarks of Queen’s. Queen’s was one of the first universities in the UK and Ireland to form spin-out companies， establishing QUBIS in 1984 to commercialize research and development activities. QUBIS has been involved in the creation of nearly 60 companies. It is currently the leading company in the UK and Ireland for revenue generation created through its spin-outs companies. Queen’s has been named the lead institution in the UK for tackling the unequal representation of women in science and engineering. It is the only UK university to hold a Silver institutional honour at the Athena SWAN Charter awards， which recognize the commitment of institutions， and science， engineering and technology (SET) departments， to addressing gender inequalities and improving career progression for female academics. In addition to the institutional award， Queen’s is also the UK university with the most departmental silver awards in the UK. Today， it is an international centre of research and education rooted at the heart of Northern Ireland.

Each school operates as a primary management unit of the university and the schools are the focus for education and research for their respective subject areas. Belfast played a key role in the Industrial Revolution， establishing its place as a global industrial centre until the latter half of the 20th century. The architectural style of Belfast"s buildings range from Edwardian， like the City Hall， to modern， like Waterfront Hall.
