University of York: On the threshold of wisdom

The University of York (informally York University, or simply York), is a research-intensive university located in the city of York, England. Established in 1963, the campus university has expanded to more than thirty departments and centres, covering a wide range of subjects. Despite its relatively young age, the university has quickly forged a strong reputation in less than half a century. York has been named the 7th best young university in the world, and is 1st within the UK, building a "reputation to rival Oxford and Cambridge". Along with the LSE, York is the only university in the UK to displace the University of Oxford to second place on league tables, second only to University of Cambridge. The University of York"s main campus is on the southern edge of the city at Heslington and is currently undergoing significant expansion with new buildings and departments including Management, Law, Theatre, Film, and Television at Heslington East. The Department of Archaeology and the graduate Centres for Eighteenth Century Studies and Medieval Studies are located in the historic King"s Manor in the city centre.Academic life is taken seriously here and courses like architecture, English and computer science have reaped the benefits. All students have a supervisor who oversees how they"re getting on both socially and academically. This is not to say that there is no fun laid on: the students" union is active politically as well as organising about five big parties each term. In this collegiate set-up, students also have events laid on a couple of times a week within their colleges.

System:There are eight colleges at the University of York, and every student is a member of a college. Staff may choose to join a college if they wish. All the colleges are of equal status, but each has its own constitution. The University is a community of scholars who apply research efforts to problems of global significance. Specialist teams include the Centre for Immunology and Infection, which works on Leishmaniasis, diabetes and HIV/AIDS, the largest cluster of environmental researchers in the UK, world-leading health economists and the unique Post-war Reconstruction and Development Unit. New research facilities include a large Neuroimaging facility, the Nanocentre and a new Plasma Physics facility.

City show: The city has a rich heritage and has provided the backdrop to major political events throughout much of its two millennia of existence. The city offers a wealth of historic attractions, of which York Minster is the most prominent, and a variety of cultural and sporting activities. York Minster, the largest Gothic cathedral in Northern Europe, stands at the city"s centre. York"s centre is enclosed by the city"s medieval walls, which are a popular walk. A feature of central York is the Snickelways, narrow pedestrian routes, many of which led towards the former market-places in Pavement and St. Sampson"s Square.
