Is It Wise to Make Friends Online?

Making friends online has increasingly grown in popularity in the last few years and now and then we hear some appalling stories of disasters as a result of it. As far as I am concerned, it is not wise to make friends online as there are potential dangers to it.

Some people"s dependence on online relationships can build up the risk of having potential psychological problems. People can be easily attracted to online life and those who are lonely, depressed or not satisfied with their real life can easily develop an addiction to the “perfect” online life, as they can make up life stories. Too much addiction can gradually affect one"s abilities and functions in the real world. Gradually the addicts become isolated from others and unconcerned with people or events around them. In addition, cyber relationships have the magical power of destroying intimate relationships between family members and friendships that exist in real life. Teenagers of the generation of Instant Messaging are also too keen on their online friends to care about their relationships with their parents.

In conclusion, though people are finding it entertaining to make friends online, it does harm in several ways. Too much trust and dependence on cyber life can cause net addiction that may lead to several psychological disorders or physical problems. Moreover, relationships in real life have been affected by online relationships. Extreme cases indicate the most dreadful consequences caused by cyber criminals. As making friends online is still spreading its attractions, people need to be aware of these dangers and take proper actions to protect themselves and their life.

The Benefits of Volunteering

Volunteering has grown into a fashion these years, with volunteers ranging from college students to white collar workers. It is reported now China has 4.5 million registered volunteers having provided more than 4.5 billion hours of volunteer work. Why would so many people like to do volunteer work? Are there any benefits of volunteering?

The answer is absolutely yes. First of all, through volunteering we can gain more experiences. Whatever volunteering work we do, either being a volunteer teacher for a village school or a volunteer worker in a retired house, we can taste different lifestyles and broaden our horizon.

Secondly, through volunteering we can acquire the sense of being needed. Many people feel frustrated with travails in life and empty with the cycling of working and resting. They gradually become numb, losing the sense of being needed. By joining the volunteer group and offering help voluntarily to people who need it, we may feel happy and fulfilled again.

Thirdly, through volunteering we can learn more good qualities. Volunteer work is team work, which needs good cooperation. We can know people with different personalities and different background joining in the volunteer group and devoting to the volunteer work together. From our covolunteers we can absorb many good qualities that could help us be better persons.

In conclusion, volunteering is of great benefit in that we can gain more experiences, acquire the sense of being needed and learn more good qualities.

Dear Jane,

I heard you want to subscribe to an Englishlanguage newspaper and I would like to recommend 21st Century to you. It is a weekly newspaper, covering many topics that we are interested in. First, you will surely be attracted to the vocabulary section, from which we can learn a lot of useful words and phrases. Besides, the testing section introduces different English tests that college students may take. I love reading the newspaper and hope you will like it too.

Sincerely yours,Amanda
