Wait a Century

Kepler

The astronomer Kepler, whose work on the planetary motions is now a classic,1 is reported to have said2 of his book that ‘it may wait a century for3 a reader, as God has waited 6000 years for an observer.’

— M. J. Adler

planetary adj. 行星的

motion n.

classic n.

observer n.

1 is now a classic

a classic novel 经典小说

classic (adj.)

Certain classic designs fit in well anywhere anytime.

classical music(古典音乐);a classical education(基于古典文学艺术的教育);a classical novel (古典小说);classical writers(古典文学作家);classical Chinese(中国文言文)

2 Kepler ... is reported to have said...

句式 sb is reported to have said... = It is reported that sb said...(据报道某人说过……)

The prime minister is reported to have resigned.

It is reported that the chairman was involved in corruption.

Jane is said to have won the competition. = It is said that Jane has won the competition.

3 it may wait a century for a reader

句式 wait (for) + time | wait for sb / sth 表示等待人或事物,要用wait for;表示等候了多少时间则可省略 for。

Wait a moment, please.

I have been waiting (for) almost an hour for you.

They are waiting for economic recovery.

The candidates are waiting to hear the results.

A car is waiting to take him to the airport.
