Promote Olympic Spirit and Enhance Exchanges Among Civilizations

Ladies and Gentlemen，
Dear friends，
Good afternoon.
With the gentle breeze of September， Beijing has ushered in another golden autumn full of the sweet smell of orange osmanthus. In this most beautiful season， I am very glad to join our sisters today from both China and abroad in renewing our friendship， greeting the 2008 Olympic Games， and wishing it a complete success.
The modern Olympics， since its beginning， has been a strong advocate of solidarity， participation and progress， sowing the seeds of peace and friendship across the world. Guided by the spirit of “faster， higher and stronger”， the Olympics has contributed significantly to exchanges among civilizations， peace， development and progress of the world over the past century. Today， the Olympic Games is not just a grand occasion of sports and cultural exchanges. More importantly， it is also a platform on which civilizations get to know others and have themselves known by others. It is an important force for world peace and progress of human civilization. The ideals and spirit of the Olympics are now deeply rooted in the heart of the people.
Regrettably however， when we look around the world， we find that the beacon of peace is not shining in every corner of the world， and that development is not benefiting everyone on this planet. The shadow of war is still haunting us， thorny issues flare up now and then， and a number of countries and peoples are plagued by poverty and diseases. Mankind is faced with more and more common challenges. In this context， the pursuit of peace， cooperation and development is the shared wish of the whole world.
Dear friends，
If we crave for peace and common development of the world， we must uphold the Olympic spirit and enhance exchanges among civilizations. We must increase our mutual understanding through exchanges， enhance mutual trust through better understanding， and seek common development on the basis of mutual trust. A single musical note cannot make an enchanting melody， and a single word cannot make an article. The wisdom of mankind has enabled us to create diverse civilizations， foster various values， and take different paths of development. It is the interaction and integration among civilizations that are moving forward the civilization on our planet and bringing about a better and more harmonious world for mankind.
The 2008 Olympic Games will be a grand event for both the Chinese people and the people around the world. It will also be a new historic opportunity for various civilizations to have in-depth exchanges with each other. During the Games， the 1.3 billion Chinese people will show the world the fine traditions of the Chinese nation-the love for peace， respect for freedom， and pursuit of happiness. They will present to the world the new image of China-openness， democracy and confidence. They will express their aspirations for peace， friendship， progress and greater advancement of human civilizations through joint efforts with the rest of the world. On the other hand， the 2008 Olympic Games will also open a window for the 1.3 billion Chinese people to appreciate the diversity of the world and feel the warmth of the world toward them. Therefore， let us work hand in hand for the success of the 2008 Olympic Games and a harmonious world of enduring peace and common prosperity.

While playing an important role in promoting world peace and development， women are also strong supporters of the Olympics and its important participants. In the sports field， they hold together， and they encourage each other. They strive for excellence， and they never give in. They radiate self-confidence， self-respect and perseverance. They have made important contribution to promoting the Olympics and enhancing mutual understanding and friendship between different peoples.
Diplomats are known as messengers of peace， bridges for friendship， and links of cultures. They are irreplaceable in the exchanges between civilizations. Many women diplomats and wives of diplomats also play an active role on the world diplomatic arena. Over the years， they have been endeavoring to enhance understanding and friendship across the world， and keep the scourge of war and disasters away from our common planet. To this end， our sisters have made great contributions.I see that their ideals and pursuit are consistent with the spirit of the Olympics. As part of this community， we have every reason to be proud of these achievements.
Dear friends，
We have come together for the shared dream and mission. Let us get united under the Olympic flag， work harder for the goal of being “faster， higher and stronger”， for better exchanges among civilizations， and for a better future for mankind.
