University of Vienna: Research-guided teaching

The University of Vienna was founded by Duke Rudolph IV in 1365. In the course of the Reformation, starting in 1520, the University of Vienna, a "papal institution", suffered a great loss of prestige. As both the Church and the university’s own adminis-trative bodies were eliminated, the university became an educational establishment of the state, focussing on the training of civil servants and physicians, but not on the education of scholars in the middle of the 18th century. The year of the revolution 1848 also greatly in-fluenced the University of Vienna. Students demanded the freedom of teach-ing and learning, and the end of any suppression of academic life. To this day, the most important success of their endeavours has been the-still-valid Article 17 of Austrian Fundamental Law: "Freedom of research and re-search-based Education." Women were admitted as full students from 1897, although their studies were limited to Philosophy. The University of Vienna does not have one joint campus. The academic facilities occupy more than sixty locations throughout the city of Vienna. It is the oldest university in the German-speaking world and one of the largest in Central Europe. It aims to sustain a wide range of studies, but at the same time to promote new and in-novative fields of research, and to establish new networks between subjects. A strong focus on research, combining fundamental with application-orient-ed research, renders this University highly attractive for the sharpest minds.

System: The university has 15 Faculties and 4 Centres: Faculty of Catholic Theology; Faculty of Protestant Theology; Faculty of Law, Faculty of Business; Economics and Statistics; Faculty of Computer Science; Faculty of Historical and Cultural Studies, Faculty of Philological and Cultural Studies, Faculty of Philosophy and Education; Faculty of Psychology; Faculty of Social Sciences; Faculty of Mathematics; Faculty of Physics, Faculty of Chemistry; Faculty of Earth Sciences, Geography and Astronomy; Faculty of Life Sciences; Centre for Translation Studies; Centre for Sport Science and University Sports; Centre for Molecular Biology; Centre for Teacher Education.

City show: Vienna is the capital and largest city of Austria Apart from being regarded as the City of Music because of its musical legacy, Vienna is also said to be "The City of Dreams" because it was home to the world"s first psycho-analyst—Sigmund Freud. The historic Centre of Vienna is rich in architectural ensembles, including Baroque castles and gardens, as well as the late-19th-century Ringstrasse lined with grand buildings, monuments and parks.
