第78章 Catholic University of Louvain: Seat of Wisdom

鲁汶大学:上智之座

英文导读

The Catholic University of Leuven, was the largest, oldest and most prominent university in Belgium. The university was founded in 1425 as the University of Leuven by John IV, Duke of Brabant and approved by a Papal bull by Pope Martin V. During France"s occupation of Belgium in the French Revolutionary Wars, the university closed by decree of the French Republic. After Belgium was annexed by the United Kingdom of the Netherlands, the State University of Louvain was founded in 1816, lasting until 1835. In 1834, a few years after Belgium gained its independence, the Catholic University of Leuven was re-founded, taking this new name, and it is identified with the old university. In 1968, tensions between the Dutch-speaking and French-speaking communities led to the splitting of the bilingual Catholic University of Leuven into two "sister" universities, with the Dutch-language university becoming a fully functioning independent institution in Leuven in 1970, and the Université Catholique de Louvain departing to a newly built greenfield campus site in the French-speaking part of Belgium. Today, nearly 1/5 of UCL students come from abroad, representing over 122 nationalities from five different continents. One fourth of UCL graduates benefit from bilateral exchange programs experience abroad and UCL welcomes equivalent numbers of students through its partnerships. Many of these exchanges of students, teachers and researchers occur through European exchange programs such as the Erasmus and Life Long Learning programs, as well as International networks. Situated beside this river, and near to the stronghold of the Dukes of Brabant, Leuven became, between the 11th and 14th centuries, the most important centre of trade in the duchy. Today, Leuven is the capital of the province of Flemish Brabant in the Flemish Region, Belgium. Leuven is well known for its summer rock festival, Marktrock.

Katholieke Universiteit Leuven: The Katholieke Universiteit Leuven or KU Leuven is a Dutch-speaking university in Flanders, Belgium. It is located in the centre of the historic town of Leuven, home to the university since 1425. The Catholic University of Leuven, considered Belgium"s oldest university, which moved to Louvain-la-Neuve in Wallonia. Since the fifteenth century, Louvain, as it is still often called, has been a major contributor to the development of Catholic theology. It is still considered the oldest Catholic university still in existence.

Université Catholique de Louvain: The Université Catholique de Louvain (UCL), is Belgium"s largest French-speaking university. It is located in Louvain-la-Neuve, with satellite campuses in Brussels, Charleroi, Mons and Tournai. It split from the Catholic University of Leuven (founded in 1834 in Mechlin under the name of Catholic University of Mechlin), Belgium"s oldest university in 1968, while the Dutch half of the university remained in Leuven under the name Katholieke Universiteit Leuven.
