The Sapienza University of Rome (Italian： Sapienza–Università di Roma， also called simply Sapienza) is a coeducational， autonomous state university in Rome， Italy. It is the largest European university and the oldest of Rome"s three state-funded universities； Sapienza was founded in 1303， more than six centuries before Tor Vergata and Roma Tre. In Italian， sapienza means"wisdom"or"knowledge". In the 1650s the university became known as Sapienza， meaning wisdom， a title it retains. Sapienza University has many campuses in Rome but its main campus is the University city.The university has improved its research programmes in the fields of engineering， natural sciences， biomedical sciences and humanities through the"Sapienza Innovation"programme. Recent cooperation with major British and American universities has resulted in scholarships for Sapienza students through large multicultural exchange programmes， for many faculties. Rome is the capital of Italy and the city is one of Europe"s and the world"s most successful city "brands"， both in terms of reputation and assets. Its historic centre is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage SiteA. list of important monuments and sites of ancient Rome includes the Roman Forum， the Domus Aurea， the Pantheon， Trajan"s Column， Trajan"s Market， the Catacombs， the Circus Maximus， the Baths of Caracalla， Castel Sant"Angelo， the Mausoleum of Augustus， the Ara Pacis， the Arch of Constantine， the Pyramid of Cestius， and the Bocca della Verità.
System： The university is divided into 21 faculties：1st Faculty of Architecture Ludovico Quaroni； 2nd Faculty of Architecture Valle Giulia， Faculty of Communication Sciences； Faculty of Economics； Faculty of Engineering； Faculty of Humanities； Faculty of Law； Faculty of Literature and Philosophy； Faculty of Mathematical， Physical and Natural Studies； 1st Faculty of Medicine and Surgery； 2nd Faculty of Medicine and Surgery； Faculty of Oriental Studies； Faculty of Pharmacy； Faculty of Philosophy， Faculty of Political Sciences； 1st Faculty of Psychology； 2nd Faculty of Psychology； Faculty of Sociology； Faculty of Statistics； School for Aerospace Engineering； School for Library and Archive Studies.
Admission： In order to cope with the large demand for admission to the university courses， some faculties hold a series of entrance examinations. The entrance test often decides which candidates will have access to the undergraduate courses. For some faculties， the entrance test is only a means through which the administration acknowledges the students" level of preparation. Students that do not pass the test can still enroll in their chosen degree courses but have to pass an additional exam during their first year.

罗马大学即罗马第一大学的简称，又称罗马一大。罗马大学位于意大利首都罗马，是意大利历史最为悠久的著名学府之一，它由教皇波尼法修八世创建于1303年，迄今已有700多年的历史了。当时的罗马大学只是罗马教皇的宫廷书院，经过几个世纪的发展，如今的罗马大学已经从创建初期的小规模教学发展成为学科齐全、设施完善的综合性大学。罗马大学在奇维塔韦基亚（Civitavecchia）、拉蒂纳（Latina）、列蒂（Rieti）三个城市设有分校。
罗马大学设有21个学院，分别为建筑学院、通信工程学院、经济学学院、工学院、人类学学院、法学院、人文学院、理学院、医学院、东方学学院、社会科学学院、空间工程学院等。其中最有特色的就要数建筑学院，物理系是意大利同类学科中规模最大、教学质量最好的学系之一。其主要专业有经济、法律、医学、建筑以及工程学等。大学的教学以主修课为主，即使不修选修课，积累学分足够即可。修学的时间也不定，但是淘汰率极高。
罗马大学有着众多的图书馆，其中数学图书馆是欧洲同学科当中最大的图书馆，也是世界上排名第二的数学图书馆。
罗马大学科研力量雄厚，成果丰富，在意大利占有举足轻重的地位，在国际上也有较大影响。罗马大学重视国际合作，与世界各国开展合作与交流。目前，罗马大学与中国多所大学和科研单位在能源、环境、物理、基础科学、空间科学、地球科学、新材料、农业、信息技术及历史和文化遗产保护等方面进行广泛的合作。
罗马是世界著名的历史文化名城，古罗马帝国的发祥地，因建城历史悠久而被称为“永恒之城”。 罗马古城酷似一座巨型的露天历史博物馆。在罗马古都遗址上，矗立着帝国元老院、凯旋门、纪功柱、万神殿和大竞技场等世界闻名的古迹；这里还有文艺复兴时期的许多精美建筑和艺术精品。
