Heidelberg University （German： Ruprecht-Karls-Universit.t Heidelberg）is a public research university located in Heidelberg， Baden-Württemberg， Germany. In 1386， the University of Heidelberg was founded by Rupert I， Elector Palatine and was the third university established in the Holy Roman Empire. Until 1803 the university was reestablished as a state-owned institution by Karl Friedrich， Grand Duke of Baden， to whom the part of the Palatinate situated on the right bank of the Rhine was allotted. Since then， the university bears his name together with the name of Ruprecht I. Notable scholars soon earned it a reputation as a "royal residence of the intellect". Heidelberg has been a coeducational institution since 1899.The University of Heidelberg played a leading part in the era of humanism and reformation and the conflict between Lutheranism and Calvinism in the 15th and 16th centuries. Heidelberg"s library， founded in 1421， is the oldest public library in Germany still intact. Today the university consists of twelve faculties and offers degree programmes at undergraduate， graduate and postdoctoral levels in some 100 disciplines. It combines a long-standing tradition with commitment to cutting-edge research in a diversity of fields encompassing life sciences including medicine， natural sciences， the humanities， social sciences， and law. Heidelberg is dedicated to being a diverse community that challenges students to understand their cultural heritage and the contemporary world， to explore frontiers of knowledge， and to develop powers of mind and spirit.
System： The university consists of 12 faculties including Faculty of Behavioural Sciences and Empirical Cultural Sciences， Faculty of Biosciences， Faculty of Chemistry and Earth Sciences， Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences， Faculty of Law， Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science， Faculty of Medicine， Faculty of Medicine in Mannheim， Faculty of Modern Languages ， Faculty of Philosophy and History， Faculty of Physics and Astronomy. The university also comprises six associated institutes including Network for Research on Ageing， Central Institute of Mental Health Mannheim， Heidelberg Institute for International Conflict Research， Heidelberg State Observatory， University Hospital Heidelberg， University Hospital Mannheim.
City show： Heidelberg is located in Southeastern Germany along the Neckar River， in the region of Baden Wurttemberg， an hour south of Frankfurt. Heidelberg is part of Germany"s "Castle Road." Heidelberg is known as the cradle of Romanticism， and its old town and castle are among the most frequented tourist destinations in Germany. The castle is surrounded by a park， where the famous poet Johann von Goethe once walked. During October or November there are the Heidelberger Theater Days and a jazz festival. Every year in November the International Film Festival Mannheim-Heidelberg take place in the city， too.

海德堡大学依靠着灵山秀水，吸引并哺育了一代又一代莘莘学子，造就了许多德意志的骄傲。哲学家黑格尔、科学家本生、音乐家舒曼、社会学家马克斯·韦伯，以及前德国总理科尔，都曾在海德堡大学执教或求学过。
