在美国，由于联邦政府和地方政府的财力、人力和权力都很有限，社会慈善事业基本上由各类民间非政府组织实施，政府仅仅负责监督规则的执行及协助。美国的慈善捐款83%来自个人，4%来自公司企业，13%来自政府。
小气的美国人好朋友结婚可能只送50美元的礼物，但一年的慈善捐款却可能达到500美元。2006年有30%的大学生从事过志愿者服务。热心慈善事业和志愿服务已成了全社会的一种可持续制度而非潮起潮落的运动。
美国的慈善组织名称形式五花八门，各具特色，不存在什么“准官方或半官方”性质的慈善机构，由各类教会和基金会管理的非盈利组织则是其中的绝对主力。慈善组织的财源主要是企业和个人的捐款及自有资产的增值赢利，政府（除委托办事提供的经费外）补贴十分有限，但它对企业与个人捐款后给予的免税优惠和对慈善组织赢利免税的政策，对慈善组织的生存发展起到了极大的支持作用。
